We crossed the finish line

Thank you everyone who supported us!

9 hours to go!

So! It’s finally here. Tommorrow morning I’ll be setting off on a journey to support the charity and a journey for personal growth.

Thank you for all your support everyone.  See you at the finish line. Wish me luck!

#LestWeForget

Less than 6 weeks to go.

I haven’t provided an update for a while - it’s been a long month.

A few weeks ago I lost another friend to this terrible illness. I served on the same team as Andy, a sergeant in the Royal Marines down in Portsmouth.

He had fallen on hard times when he left the Royal Marines and like so many before him, his demons got the best of him.

We all struggle and for most who have been in conflict zones, the demons are very real. I’ve been there in the past - it’s not a pleasant place.  And it took all my strength to get out of those hard times.

We don’t talk about it because we think normal people won’t understand us.  It’s literally the worst thing we can do. Veterans, male and female have such a sense of pride that we feel like it’s admitting defeat if we bring it into conversation.

But that’s wrong. We need to change this way of thinking. At Andy’s funeral I was so sad that he hadn’t spoken up and asked for help. I found myself getting angry yet at the same time being heartbroken that we were laying to rest another young man because he felt unable to talk about what was happening in his mind.

I was quiet for a few weeks, as I reflected on why I am doing this race. I’m not fit like I used to be, my knee is in pain and it’s going to be hard, but I will be thinking of all my comrades who took their own lives because of the things we saw  whilst serving.

When I think of the race and worry that I might not be able to complete it, I remind myself of how far I’ve come. Many of my friends didn’t make it.

I am going to do this for them. Your support for me is really support for all veterans out there who may be suffering in silence. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I appreciate you.

Stepping over obstacles

So I thought I would give an update on how it has all been going.  Just under 14 weeks to go and my training has been off to a slow start.

I recently got  a diagnosis on my knee:  because of all my previous knee surgery, I have developed some serious osteoarthritis on my knee and also torn my medial meniscus.

There is no cure for this and at first this felt like a massive blow - why after signing up for this race has my knee blown up like this? I was down and frustrated and this was not helped by the doctor telling me I probably won't be able to run again.  He also said I won't be able to wear high heels either. I don't know what I was more upset about. Not being able to run again or get some sparkly heels on my feet!

He also wasn't confident that I would be strong enough to do the race.....

Well for those who know me - my determination kicked in and I got stuck in with finding a way to get back to fighting fit.  I decided to take an holistic body approach, my diet has been overhauled and I got stuck in with the exercises my physio recommended.

A few weeks in and the physio was quite impressed with my progress.  She is confident that with the right training and extra support of the knee (with a brace) I will be able to complete this race!  Albeit, I will probably be one of the more slower ones.  (I can deal with that)

Put an obstacle in my way and I will step over it with (some) confidence!

So 14 weeks of training coming up.  All the donations and words of support are really spurring me on.  This cause is so close to my heart - I am going to do everything I can, push my body to the limits and get it done for all those veterans out there who are going through a hard time.

I won't be beaten and nor should you!

The day I signed up

Nothing different about today, except I woke up and instead of thinking about how I could make a difference to other veteran's lives in the future,  I decided to take action TODAY.

As a veteran, I have gone through the ups and downs of transitioning  from regular military to civilian life and can understand how many of my fellow veterans may be feeling in their minds daily.

I’ve been blessed, as I got through the difficult days steadily and came out the otherside to live a happy and positive life. I know many who didn’t make it.

So here I am. I signed up, and asked a few other vets and friends to join me. So we are a little team called ‘team steady’!

We don’t have any super fit peeps on the team, but we are all hoping to be be a bit fitter by the end of this and of course help our fellow veterans.
Hopefully you can support me and my team, one way or another.  🙂

Support my Race to Remember

This year I will be taking part in Race to Remember to raise vital funds for life-changing mental health treatment for veterans.

Combat Stress is the UK's leading charity for veterans' mental health. For over a century, they've helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.

I’m taking on Race to Remember to help take vital steps towards ensuring veterans can get the support they need.

Thank you so much for your support.
