Coast to Coast Update

Gutted to be writing this but, having crossed two national parks, and covered 110 miles over 5 days of relentless walking, we have decided to pause our challenge.

A combination of injury within the team and the current temperatures across Yorkshire lead to a lot of soul searching as we reached Richmond last night. It became apparent that it would not be possible to achieve our target of reaching Robin Hood’s Bay within our stated timescale of 7 nights (8 days) as the pace we were maintaining, in our condition, was becoming reckless and exposing us to unacceptable levels of risk amidst a level three extreme heat warning.

We were loathe to introduce rest days or reduce the walking miles each day as we felt this violated the original agreement of what we set out to undertake for which people have already donated. An extended walking window was also negated by our own work and family commitments.

For similar reasons, we did not wish to abandon the challenge completely. As such, we have decided that the most pragmatic solution at this point is an extended time-out effectively pressing pause on our walk to allow for our condition to improve and, god-willing, the weather to calm itself down! We will then return to Richmond as a three, wildcamp, and pick up exactly where we left off for the final three 25 mile days – culminating at RHB.

We hope everyone can understand this decision and the reasoning behind it; we started this all as a team and will finish it as one within 8 days of walking... although not now on consecutive days.

Thank you all for your understanding; with your help we’ve raised a lot of money for Combat Stress which is still on its way veterans in need and will make a real difference.

110 - Not out!

One Month to go 😱😱😱

How quickly time flies!!

I just thought I'd pen a quick update so that people can see how the team and myself are getting on with preparing for the Coast 2 Coast.

It's been eye opening and certainly more demanding than I think any of us anticipated... this doesn't mean it hasn't been fun though!

Perhaps the obvious demand is the physical aspect of training for an event such as this. In an ideal world we'd have liked to built in a longer training period but fitting the work around our respective employment and family commitments (not withstanding the fact that we were also really keen to crack on) had us arrive at 6th July 2022, curtailing our training period. Personally I've been mixing long day walks of up to 27 miles with shorter fell walks encompassing ascending / descending more difficult terrain. I've tried to simulate the task ahead by undertaking these walks after broken sleep in tents and with the added weight of a laden backpack. I know the other lads have done similar as I've seen the pictures, including the blisters 😬. I've been fortunate to avoid blisters but have experienced aches in my joints as they protest the new workload!

Obviously the training requirements have meant each of us have had to take a back seat with some family commitments and I for one am grateful to have such an understanding wife and children to allow me to disappear for prolonged periods [I suspect they enjoy the peace 😂].

By far the biggest suprise has been the financial and emotional aspects of preparing for this event. It's natural, I feel, to want to do a really good job in order not to let your sponsors down and raise as much money as you can for charities such as Combat Stress; There is a weight of responsibility as each of us know the necessity of support being available for many veterans who suffer during / following their time in the services. Combined with this, I think it's fair to say we are all competitive and want to achieve the ambitious target set (7 nights). In my case this has lead to attempting to keep my kit as light as possible in order to increase the likelihood of 25 mile days. A sensible... but expensive endeavour. I'm sure the other lads have faced their own trials and tribulations in preparing too.

I'll try to update again before the walk but, needless to say, we are and will continue to work hard to ready ourselves for the 6th July 2022.

I'll add a few photo's to this page too.

Thank you all for your support. Please spread the word and keep in touch during the walk to keep our spirits up... It will really help spur us on 🙂👌

Coast 2 Coast

Combat Stress is the UK's leading charity for veterans' mental health. For over a century, they've helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.

I’m taking on vital steps towards ensuring veterans can get the support they need.

Thank you so much for your support.
