Worzel Gummidge Country

Today,  I took a 20 mile long run from Totton (near Southampton) along the Testway to Stockbridge (did you know - They filmed some of Worzel Gummidge there 79-81) - the weather was shocking ☔️ -

1/2 marathon event

Great to see soldiers competing with the local community and running together around a challenging course in Hampshire today..Some brilliant times recorded and some huge hills too!!.
Gosh, I’m getting older and the soldiers are getting younger 😂🙄!  - I did pass a few on my way though! ✅. All part of the build up training to November 9th and the “race to remember” - gulp!!

Running hills and flats

This weekend I travelled to Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 and managed a 16 mile long run. Started at 500m above sea level and pushing through some lovely scenery…felt okay..fueling was good and my water intake was good.

Running in the Lake District

Although I’m not running at full strength at the moment. It was great to get out and run around Center Parcs in the Lake District. Amazing paths and trails…so peaceful and I even saw two Red squirrels 🐿️ …it’s great to run and be amongst the trees and wildlife 🐇

The hills and the flats

This week has seen a step change. I’ve had some hill running on Salisbury plain (trust me it isn’t flat!), some tempo road sessions and today some running along the Thames river path…the weekend ahead has a back 2 back 10 km and 15 km session…it’s nice to mix things up and see different scenery….looking forward to finding some new routes and terrain.

Warm weather training

Really fortunate this week to do some training over in Mallorca - whilst I’m having a short break away..The weather is amazing and the warmth is so nice. I can see why lots of athletes / cycle teams come over to Mallorca!.  Some lovely rustic roads to run along and the scenery is spectacular…
Next week the schedule ramps up into module 3….including long hill sessions.

Long run build up

Today, I took a 20 Km (ish) run over Salisbury Plain…I forgot how hilly and how hard it was on feet. It was a struggle today!!
The temperature was okay…some lessons learnt though - I need to carry a reserve of water for when I do my long runs…or pre position water bottles along my route!!
I’m working with hydration techniques at the moment. I have a Salomon advance 12 vest - which seems to be hitting all my requirements…anyway as my brother says - you have to have hard runs to enjoy the easy ones!!

The journey begins

In April 2024 after the passing of my Grandmother (98), I made a promise to myself and my family that I would run a 100 mile Ultra Marathon event -

When ? (TBC). 2025 I think…

Why? - I’m not really sure,  only that I knew that I wanted to push myself and see how far my body would take me - but I do know that the key to success would be my own mental robustness and resilience to push me through the long training sessions and the event itself.

Also, I knew that I wanted to continue to raise awareness around mental heath. Combat Stress does amazing things for the silent warriors that struggle everyday.

What are the odds of success ?- I have run multiple marathons and in 2017, I ran a 100 Km ultra marathon which I really enjoyed…I’m currently in month 3 of a training schedule and it’s starting to ramp up!! - I have a Trail marathon in September 2024 and this Race to remember (77km) in November.

Check out my journey.

Support my Race to Remember

This year I will be taking part in Race to Remember to raise vital funds for life-changing mental health treatment for veterans.

Combat Stress is the UK's leading charity for veterans' mental health. For over a century, they've helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.

I’m taking on Race to Remember to help take vital steps towards ensuring veterans can get the support they need.

Thank you so much for your support.
