About Ian 'ROBBO' Robinson

Words from Ian’s mam Mary

A beloved son, a brother to Keith and a ‘special brother’ friend and relative to many others in every sense.

On 19 May 2013 I received the devastating news that not only changed my life on that day but I was also aware that the world as I knew it would never be the same again.

Ian had taken his own life.

Those who knew Ian would describe him as “inspirational, charismatic, determined, a great friend and confidante, a role model, a great laugh, fun to be around, an amazing presence, someone who would light up a room. ”

I could go on.

Ian was also a consummate professional and an accomplished athlete who was an amazing support to others.

He has been described as a ‘legend’ – a legend is someone who leaves an unforgettable impression on others. They touch lives, they are remembered and they are cherished.

This is a proud mam writing this – what a wonderful legacy of himself he left behind which will live on forever.

So on the 21 May 2022 just over 9 years since Ian’s death it will be so fitting to hold our 26 mile Northumberland Coastal Challenge memorial walk in his name. I know he would be so proud that this event is taking place and it is a privilege to preserve his memory in such a positive way.

For me the objective of this walk will be to raise funds in Ian’s memory for COMBAT STRESS a charity that is providing life changing and lifesaving support for veterans from all services and conflicts with presenting problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression as well as providing somewhere to turn to in the darkest hour.

The statistics of suicide are alarming. In 2019 on average there were 18 registered deaths by suicide per day in England and Wales alone – suicide is the single biggest killer of men aged 45 years and under in this country. Deeply disturbing figures.

I believe it is vital that the enormity and scale of these figures is acknowledged to enable awareness to be raised.

If our walk raises enough cash to enable resources to be put in place to help even just one person what a difference we will make together.

These are not just statistics that happen to someone else these are the realities that people are faced with every day - it is heart-breaking

I know I live with it every day.

The reality is suicide does not end the chance of life becoming worse; it eliminates the chance of it ever becoming better.
Ian left home (Northumberland) at 17 years of age to join the armed forces. When he returned to Northumberland he frequently visited the ‘coast’ he loved to run on the beaches and had a particular fondness for Bamburgh, therefore this walk will be an apt tribute to his memory and his love for the place.
As a proud mam I want to thank you all for raising money for such a worthy cause in Ian’s memory.
