Mark Shuttleworth Welsh Veteran Awards Volunteer of the Year
Two months after receiving the above award I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and underwent major surgery and extensive treatment during 2023/24 my last treat was February 2025. I was determined that this was a setback and would not stop me doing what I felt was important. Last March, by walking 100 miles in the month. Jess (my dog) and I I raised over £2000 for Combat Stress and I thank all those who support me then. I support armed forces charities locally and nationally because I know the vital work they do. I am a board member of the VC Gallery with bases in Haverfordwest and Pembroke Dock, supporting the health and wellbeing of both veteran and community members. For over 6 years I worked as a volunteer caseworker for Ssafa. Through this work and experience I have become more and more aware of the contribution Combat Stress makes in supporting the mental health of veteran members of the armed forces. My intention is to walk another 100 miles this March to raise vital funds for life-changing mental health treatment for veterans.
Combat Stress is the UK's leading charity for veterans' mental health. For over a century, they've helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.
I’m taking on March in March again to help take vital steps towards ensuring veterans can get the support they need.
Please support me in this endeavour and together we can make a difference. I will be updating my blog along the way so join me on my journey through beautiful Pembrokeshire.
