Siobhan's Walk in Honour of her Grandad

01 Mar 2025

I’ve completed 61 miles so far in my March in March challenge for Combat Stress, and I’m determined to keep going until the end of the month. I’ve taken on this challenge for two deeply personal reasons, and I’d like to share them with you.

First, I’m walking in memory of my grandad, Private Daniel Aldred, a survivor of a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II. The photo attached shows him in the center, standing alongside his sisters, Maggie and Edna. Grandad’s resilience and strength have always inspired me, and this walk is my way of honoring his sacrifices and the hardships he endured. His story is a reminder of the toll war takes on those who serve, and the importance of remembering and supporting those who have lived through such experiences.

The second reason I’m walking is because of my role as a veteran clinical lead at Pennygate Medical Centre. In this position, I have the privilege of supporting military veterans and their families, providing them with the care and understanding they need as they navigate life after service. I hold regular coffee mornings to create a supportive environment where veterans can come together, share experiences, and find a sense of community.

Having worked as an armed forces champion at the hospital and now in my current role, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges veterans face when they transition from military life to civilian life. The physical and mental struggles many endure are often overlooked, and I believe more needs to be done to offer support. It’s a cause that’s close to my heart, and I’m proud to help our local veterans find the care and support they deserve during tough times.
