Great North Run 2025

Happy New Year

Now the madness of the festive season is over and we settle in to the new year I find myself reflecting on lessons of the year past and the challenges of 2025.

Not least my commitment to raise funds and awareness for Combat Stress in 2015 in memory of a much missed sister veteran.

My challenge will culminate in the Great North Run in September but I’ll tackle the odd extra bit along the way, starting with the March in March.

I’ll not ask you for any cash now, we’re all skint after Christmas and it seems like there are 93 days til payday! But, as the months go on, if you could find the generosity of spirit to support me by sharing my posts or chucking a pound or two into my virtual bucket, it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Trying to make some positive from a painful negative.

Don’t do it brother, I’ve still got your back,
just like I did when we served in Iraq.
I can see that you’re hurting in ways I can’t fix,
but find strength in the fact that I’ve still got your six.
The bond that ties us has never been stronger
just talk to me bro, carry on a bit longer.
This is your worst battle, but side by side
we can make it through with dignity and pride.

Don’t do it Sister, and bear in mind
that just like in combat I won’t leave you behind.
With all means at disposal I’ll help you to fight,
whenever you need me and all through the night.
You’re still one of us, however you feel,
we’re here for you now when the shit has got real.
Reach out to your brethren, let us assist,
we don’t want to lose you – you’ll be greatly missed.

Running in memory of Captain Katie Watkins. Much loved and respected chaplain at Newcastle Hospitals who sadly lost the fight with her demons in 2024, a huge loss for humanity.

Support my challenge

This year I will be taking on the Great North Run to raise vital funds for life-changing mental health treatment for veterans.

Combat Stress is the UK's leading charity for veterans' mental health. For over a century, they've helped former servicemen and servicewomen deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.

I’m taking on vital steps towards ensuring veterans can get the support they need.

Thank you so much for your support.
