Panic averted.

Hi all. I hope you're enjoying the lovely weather, and looking forward to the weekend.

I had an injury scare last Friday. Ironically, just a couple of days before, I'd been making a mental check list of things I'd have to cover during this training block. Training schedule, nutrition, and getting adequate rest and recovery were the obvious ones, but I did ponder on what I'd do if I picked up an injury.
Then, two days later, I tweaked my right calf and hamstring at work.

I'd had a training schedule all planned out, and now panic started to set in. How bad was it? How long would it take to heal? How would it affect my preparations?

I split my time that weekend between resting, icing (which, I've been told, is the wrong thing to do), taking anti-inflammatories, and going for the occasional fifteen minute walk to keep things from seizing up, as well as to just get out of the flat.

I went back to work on Monday, and have laid off of going to the gym for the time being. Having said that, my job is physically demanding, I'm on my feet all day, and I routinely clock up 20,000 steps on work days without doing any additional training. The calf and hamstring have settled down, but I'll give it a few more days before doing some cardio on the bike, gradually progressing to some light running, then back into more serious sessions once I'm confident I'm safe to do so.

I did read that a lot of injuries don't just happen, they can be a warning sign that you may be overdoing it, and, looking back now, I think I was guilty of that. It's also given me the opportunity to look at other areas that need attention, like biomechanical imbalances, muscular tightness etc.

Anyway, the good news is that this happened 10 weeks out from the race, so it's given me the time to recover and get my training back on track. If it's taught me anything, it's that things aren't always as bad as they first might seem, and that I need to be adaptable and find solutions.

Happy training!

Support my Race to Remember

This year I will be taking part in Race to Remember to raise vital funds for life-changing mental health treatment for veterans.

Combat Stress is the UK's leading charity for veterans' mental health. For over a century, they've helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.

I’m taking on Race to Remember to help take vital steps towards ensuring veterans can get the support they need.

Thank you so much for your support.
