4th Day March-In-March 2024

Tuesday 5th Mar
Joined up with U3A Narberth Walking Group meeting up at Stackpole Elidor Church 10.00am.  Quote "The route is largely of a Leisurely rating, the coast path section is slightly more challenging and rated Moderate, in places the path is narrow and close to the edge, please bring poles/sticks and good grip footwear…."  Then the storm rolled in adding a deluge of rain and sleet driven by gale force winds.

St Elidyr's Church, Stackpole is dedicated to St. James and St Elidyr,[10] and goes back to the thirteenth century. It lies at the bottom of a quiet wooded valley with just three small cottages and the rectory in the immediate vicinity.   The Stackpole Estate (Welsh: Ystad Ystagbwll) is located between the villages of Stackpole (Welsh: Ystagbwll) and Bosherston (Welsh: Llanfihangel-clogwyn-gofan) in Pembrokeshire, Wales, within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. It is situated within the community of Stackpole and Castlemartin. Consisting of 5 square miles (13 km2) of farmland, lakes, woodland, beaches, and cliffs, the estate is always accessible to visitors. It is owned and maintained by the National Trust.

Stackpole Quay, Pembrokeshire
The coastal section roams over magnificent headlands with views stretching down past rugged cliffs to the surging agree ocean below. Route took us along the coast path to Stackpole Head with dramatic views of the stormy sea whipped up by gale force winds. Thru Barafundle Bay, backed by dunes, then up to the vertiginous cliffs which are dramatic and scary, especially when being blown over by gusts of wind and slipping on glutinous mud. Luckily on-shore winds - off would have been lethal.
