Amsterdam Half Marathon 2025

Amsterdam Half Marathon - done!

Dear all,
Last Sunday was "the day"! 60,000 runners attempted either the whole or the half marathon. We started by cheering on my nephew Jari and his fiancee Marlien who bravely tackled the whole marathon. Early in the afternoon it was our turn. The half marathon took me through many a place I know from my childhood... it was a Sentimental Journey, but also a pretty tough one - I struggled, especially towards the end. The finish in the Olympic Stadium was great though.
A big Thank You to all supporters who donated to Combat Stress!
On to next year...?

Almost there...

We are less than three weeks away from the Amsterdam Half Marathon now - I am looking forward to it but am getting slightly nervous as well... How will it go in my home town?

During the run, we will be getting close to the spot where in 1945 my grandmother witnessed the execution of dozens of innocent men as repercussion for actions by the Dutch resistance. We can live in peace now because of the sacrifice of all those allied soldiers who came to our aid.
That is why I am running for Combat Stress, who are giving great support for veterans. If you want to support Combat Stress, please do!

Still in training!

Dear all,
Last week I did the Great North Run from Newcastle to South Shields - with 60,000 other runners! We were welcomed by the Red Arrows who gave a great show over the North Sea. I finished in 2 hours and 6 minutes, a time I am very happy with. Just over a month now till I join the Combat Stress runners in the Amsterdam half marathon. What will be in my home town...? If you are interested in Combat Stress, please have a look at my fundraising site. Thanks! Wish me luck for next month...

Support my challenge

Why do I support Combat Stress? In early 1945, my father was 17 years old. As his father had been taken away, he was trying to feed his mother and sisters during the notorious Hunger Winter. In his diary, he writes about the hunger tours he made, trying to get some scraps of food. He follows the progress of the Soviet troops, and hopes they will liberate his father from the concentration camp. He follows the movements of the British and American armies as they progress into Germany.

The reason he survived is the bravery of, and sacrifice made by all those British, Canadian, American and Polish soldiers who fought to liberate him and our country.

We have never forgotten that. That is the reason why in 2025, 80 years later, I will run the Amsterdam Half Marathon to raise funds for Combat Stress.

Combat Stress is the UK's leading charity for veterans' mental health. For over a century, they've helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.

If you want to support Combat Stress that would be great! Thank you so much for your support.

Rinke.
