Thank you
I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all of those who have so generously donated to Combat Stress for the D-Day Challenge that I am doing. I am now so close to the target required but would love to raise as much as I can.In terms of training, after having a slightly easier week due to injury, I am back to it this week - running and strength training in the gym. I will do another long run tomorrow (Saturday) and will start building up those miles now in readiness for the beaches in France!
Spring Trails Half Marathon - Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire
Due to carrying a hamstring injury, I have had to mostly rest this last week - so not much running or gym work. However, today as my training continues, I completed a local trails half marathon. Was great to see some fellow Kingsway Runners there. Was a great run with some great support along the way but I was glad to see the finish line!
Update - 12th March 2024 - Less than 3 months to go
Training continues - I'm regularly going to the gym for some strength work and running regularly with 2 local running groups, Kingsway Runners and Sellars Bridge Striders. I'd like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to both of those running groups for the runs they put on which makes part of my training much easier.Long runs continue on a Sunday, with much longer runs to come as the deadline of D-Day approaches.
The run across the assault beaches in Normandy will be an emotional run for me, especially finishing at Pegasus Bridge.
Jamie's D-Day 44 Challenge 2024 - for Combat Stress
First of all a huge thank you to all of those who have donated to this great cause. Your donations continue to motivate me with my training.Jamie's D-Day 44 Challenge 2024 - for Combat Stress
What is it?
The Combat Stress D-Day 44 Challenge is a commemorative event that honours the 1944 Allied invasion of occupied France and raises funds for Veterans’ Mental Health. Participants can choose between a 22-mile walk, a 22-mile run and a 44-mile ultra-run across the historic beaches of Normandy, finishing at the iconic Pegasus Bridge. The course takes you through corn, wheat and barley fields and down the Normandy coastline over sand dunes, through marsh land and pebble beaches. The course also follows forgotten paths and rocky outcrops and passes through beautiful Norman villages. It really will be a challenge!
The D-Day 44 Challenge was co-founded by Lt Col Mike McErlain, a trauma spine and orthopaedic surgeon who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Northern Ireland and was attached to the Parachute Regiment. He tragically died on 6 June 2013 while running the Normandy beaches for charity. His wife Joanna, with the support of Combat Stress, has continued the D-Day Challenge in his memory.
I have chosen to participate in this challenge as it is a great opportunity for me to challenge myself while remembering the sacrifices of all veterans and serving service personnel. It is also a great opportunity for me to consider my own Mental Health and give me focus, direction and purpose, which I feel that I have lacked for some time.
Why?
In doing this challenge, I am able to:-
1. Support Combat Stress raise funds for Veterans’ Mental Health; providing much needed and currently very under-funded vital support and treatment for those who need it; and
2. Support Combat Stress by raising awareness of Mental Health issues and working to reduce the stigma around Mental Health concerns in the Armed Forces community.
So here it is …. I am asking you to help me raise a minimum of £1250, all donations going directly to Combat Stress. I plan to run 22 miles but if I hit over £2000, I will aim to run the full 44 miles (if I can change the distance through Combat Stress). I have a personal interest in raising awareness around Veterans’ Mental Health having struggled myself both while serving in the Army and since leaving.
I feel that this is a very noble and compassionate reason to participate in the D-Day 44 Challenge. Veterans’ Mental Health is a serious and often overlooked issue that affects many former servicemen and women, along with their families and carers. Veterans may experience mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance misuse and addiction, as a result of their military service and the challenges of transitioning to civilian life
Your contribution will make a difference in the lives of many veterans and their loved ones. Thank you for your generosity and support in advance.
Look out for updates on how I’m getting on with my training and progression. Training is well under way (for the 44 miles – because I know we’ll raise that important £2000!)
Thanks again,
Jamie

Support my D-Day Challenge
In honour of our forefathers as well as current servicemen who have bravely fought to protect our way of life, I will be taking on the D-Day Challenge to raise vital funds for life-changing mental health treatment for veterans.
The D-Day 44 Challenge commemorates the 1944 Allied invasion of occupied France. I will be heading to Normandy, to race across its picturesque beaches, finishing at the historic Pegasus Bridge on the 80th anniversary of D-Day, 6 June 2024.
Combat Stress is the UK's leading charity for veterans' mental health. For over a century, they've helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.
I’m taking on D-Day Challenge to help take vital strides towards ensuring veterans can get the support they need.
Thank you so much for your support.
