Children from military, veteran and first responder families face particular challenges that are not necessarily shared by children from other families.

This study addresses an important gap in the availability of resources tailored specifically for children coping with parental moral injury, as identified by Reeves (Citation2024). Our study provides evidence-informed resources for carers and healthcare professionals to initiate and maintain discussions with children and families. Diversity and interdisciplinary knowledge and skills within the research team and affected communities and partners highlight the value of collaborative approaches in understanding and addressing complex issues such as moral injury. Our preliminary findings demonstrate the suitability of this e-storybook resource for children coping with parental moral injury. Adopting an iterative approach to development ensures the e-storybook remains responsive to the evolving needs of its audience, enhancing its long-term effectiveness and relevance.

Mental health services for veterans | Combat Stress

Combat Stress provide clinical treatment and support for veterans from the British Armed Forces, focusing on those with complex mental health issues resulting from their experiences during military service. When some military personnel leave service, their experiences can’t easily be left behind. Without treatment, psychological trauma can eventually tear lives apart.

Combat Stress believe military trauma shouldn’t destroy the lives of veterans and their families. For over a century, they’ve helped former servicemen and women with mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression.

Combat Stress is the UK's leading veterans' mental health charity, the work They do is life-changing and often life-saving. No one else does what they do. They provide the only intensive mental health treatment service to UK veterans. Combat Stress services are provided across the UK, in-person and online. At a time that can be isolating and daunting, they're here to help.

100-Miles-In-May 2025. Day 17, 92 miles & 6 days to my 77th Birthday

Unsure what pressie to gift a 77-year-old - why not donate on https://events.combatstress.org.uk/fundraisers/alanmackelworth/100-miles-in-may

Combat Stress was founded over a hundred years ago just after the end of First World War to treat what was then known as ‘shell shock’. Since then, treatment for PTSD has changed enormously. But the mental health problems that former servicemen and women can face are as relevant as ever. Combat Stress's role today is to help those with some of the most complex mental health challenges resulting from their experiences during military service. Combat Stress provide the only intensive mental health treatment service to UK veterans.

When some military personnel leave service, their experiences can’t easily be left behind, and without treatment, psychological trauma can eventually tear lives apart. Combat Stress deliver life-changing treatment, bringing together professionals with specialist focus to meet individual needs. Helping them on their journey to recovery, giving veterans the tools to manage their mental health. It’s a service that thousands depend on. No one else does what Combat Stress do.

Combat Stress support veterans from every service and every conflict.  Donate please on https://events.combatstress.org.uk/fundraisers/alanmackelworth/100-miles-in-may

100-Miles-In-May 2025 - Day 10 - 20 days to go - please donate.

Am working hard to help Combat Stress 100-Miles-in-May exceed their March-in-March. Quite challenge.

"Supporters of Combat Stress, the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health, have raised an incredible £1 million over the last eight years through the organisation’s annual fundraising challenge March in March.

The event sees participants walk 10 miles in March in a show of solidarity and support for former service personnel living with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Since its launch, thousands across the UK have laced up their boots to take part in March in March, raising vital funds to help Combat Stress deliver its life-changing specialist mental health services. Last year alone, nearly 12,500 veterans benefited from the charity’s support.

This year the challenge raised a staggering £388,317, taking the total raised since its inception in 2018 to £1,071,711.10. Being a virtual event, with no physical race start line, participants over the years have taken on the challenge in increasingly unique ways: from commando crawling across a beach, to cycling on a MOTOmed movement therapy bike (due to having cerebral palsy) to running continuously around a running track for 48hours (trading 10 miles for 200 miles!).

To date, 10,696 people have been inspired to take part since the challenge’s inception, with well over 100,000 miles covered in support of veterans with complex mental health issues."

So please donate to this fantastic charity - we all have family members and friends connected to veterans.

100-Miles-In-May 2025 - Day 5 - tree root tumble and all

A walk in the woods, a summer BBQ, an evening in front of the TV. These are things many enjoy. But for some veterans, these things can trigger traumatic memories and transport them back to a moment in conflict. Combat Stress's latest campaign highlights the day-to-day reality of living with post-traumatic stress disorder.

If you are a veteran or are a family member or carer worried about the mental health of a loved one, please contact our free 24-hour Helpline on 0800 138 1619. Alternatively, text 07537 173683 (standard charges may apply for texts) or email helpline@combatstress.org.uk.

100-Miles-In-May - Day 2. A day of dog walks and garden maintenance.

But still managed to add 4+ miles so 12 total. Languishing at #51 in donations - please can you help.
Combat Stress specialist treatment is available online, in the community, through outpatient appointments and, in some cases, residentially. They provide treatment across the UK and have treatment hubs in Scotland, Northern Ireland, South, Central and North England.
Treatment may include:
Building resilience: to give you the tools to enable you to manage veterans' mental health better and improve their quality of life.
Managing the consequences of trauma: this is to help them feel better about themselves particularly if they struggle with guilt or shame about their past. Other help includes support to understand and manage overwhelming emotions, such as anger or fear, or to help if them feel ‘cut-off’ from their emotions.
Trauma-focused therapy is one-to-one specialist treatment which involves talking about traumatic experiences in a way that they can cope with, to reduce their symptoms.
Looking to the future: this is to help them find ways to spend their time on activities that are important to them, including relationships, leisure, work, life situations and their community.

100-Miles-In-May - Day 1 - Colby Woodland Gardens to Heritage Park

Proudly wearing my Combat Stress 100-Miles-in-May t-shirt in shorts and crocs completed the 7+ miles from beautiful Colby Woodlands Gardens down the National Trust path to Amroth, along the sands as the tide went out to Wiseman's Bridge Inn for a hydration stop. With brilliant sunshine and 23C, 0% Guiness (with 0% alcohol and just 72 calories) is an essential.  For me Combat Stress walking events are win-win - donations to help vets and raising my own fitness levels.

100-Miles-In-May 2025 - Count Down and Prep.

OK so warming up by walking Maya around Hartland Country Park. Timpson's Farnborough have worked their magic on my trusty walking shoes that have seen hundreds of miles helping raise donations to Combat Stress.  Combat Stress laces have earnt my thanks keeping them in place. March-in-March 2025 saw me complete 195 miles but more importantly given the increasing demand for Combat Stress by veterans, raise over £2,142 during 2024 and 2025 (so far).

The Combat Stress Helpline offers veterans and their families access to support anytime, day or night. Mental health issues often arise unpredictably, and this round-the-clock availability ensures that no veteran faces crisis alone. Veterans can connect immediately with someone who understands and can guide them toward further support.

Yep, it's great to be part of the Combat Stress as its win-win. Funding for the Help-line which was contacted almost  16,000 times during the year and getting me fitter than I have been for some 40 years.
