Sherry McBain - Sisters with Blisters

This year we will be taking part in Race to Remember to raise vital funds for life-changing mental health treatment for veterans.

Combat Stress is the UK's leading charity for veterans' mental health. For over a century, they've helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.

I’m taking on Race to Remember to help take vital steps towards ensuring veterans can get the support they need.

Thank you so much for your support.

Hi, I’m Sherry. A Royal Air Force Veteran. I have PTSD from Operational Service in Iraq and Afghanistan and was medically discharged after 27 years Service in the Princess Mary’s RAF Nursing Service. PTSD is a battle I fight every day, nightmares, flashbacks, guilt shame and worthlessness. But I am lucky, I have a supportive and loving family and a wonderful group of friends. 6 years on from diagnosis and I am back in therapy.

Being outside in nature helps me regain some balance and it is helping me recover after major surgery earlier in the year.

Everyday I am reminded of those we lost, those we nursed during their final hours at their most vulnerable moment in time and those who’s lives have been changed immeasurably through physical and mental injury.

Remembrance is a difficult time of year, but it is vitally important to remember the sacrifices of many brave men and women. Its my duty and my desire to remember and reflect but it falls in the season of bangs and explosions (firework night) and most remembrance events are crowded and accompanied by the Last Post or a gun salute. Neither of these are great for me.

So I am walking to Remember and I hope, along with my friends Mandy and Issy, that we can raise some money to help others suffering with their mental health access the support they need.

So many Service men and women are at risk of suicide and Combat Stress is one of the charities trying desperately to help. if we help raise some funds to help just one person… then every step we take will be worth it. We are walking 30km across the South Downs on 9 Nov. Please support us if you can. Thanks for reading.
