Support my Ride to Victory

This year I will be taking on #RidetoVictory to raise vital funds for life-changing mental health treatment for veterans.

Combat Stress is the UK's leading charity for veterans' mental health. For over a century, they've helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.

I’m taking on #RidetoVictory to help take vital strides towards ensuring veterans can get the support they need.

Thank you so much for your support.

My Updates

I DID IT!!!!

Sunday 15th Aug
So pleased to say that I've been able to completed the mad challenge I set myself. So pleased I started this as the conversations I've had around Veterans Mental Health and MH on the whole have been really encouraging and very open too which is promising. I must give a massive thank you to Martlesham Leisure for allowing me to do this in their Spin Studio but not only for that but making go without a hitch, being very accommodating and encouraging. Now for a rest and using the words of the great Sir Steve Redgrave 'if anybody sees me near a bike, shoot me' 😀

Last but one ride

Saturday 14th Aug
This was the day I certainly wasn't looking forward too, 2nd ride inside 24hrs was always going to be tough but that's out of the way now. Incorporated a Spin Class to break things up a little which was nice. Now to rest up as much as possible in preparation for tomorrow's finale and a pint with Nigel Seamanand other Veterans at Martlesham Leisure 😃

5th ride

Friday 13th Aug
Sorry no photo evidence today, was in the middle of filming a vlog with Nigel from Combat2Coffee and forgot to take a photo of the screen. Take it from me I completed the 76miles in 154 minutes. The ride was tough as my hamstrings and higher calf muscles are pretty sore right now so having to just get through rides now to make sure I can get to the end on Sunday which is the all important thing. Please do Donate to Combat Stress if you haven't already done so!!

Day 4 done!!

Thursday 12th Aug
Good session today!! Feeling better now so more confident to push things a bit more. Combat2Coffee are coming up to Martlesham Leisure to do a live vlog regarding my challenge and are publicising it on their Social Media platforms so hopefully more donations will follow.

That felt much better!!

Wednesday 11th Aug
Ride no 3 done and it was a huge relief to complete it without any hiccups. Took things slowly to begin with as still not feeling 100% but was able to push harder midway onwards. Just thinking that I'm nearly half way through. Will I miss it, nope but I'm really pleased that I started this journey and for such a great cause.

2nd ride completed!!

Tuesday 10th Aug
So much harder today as had a couple of issues with the seat post slipping down and the stopages messed up my rythem. Stupidly chased the time rather than be satisfied with just getting the miles done. Won't do that again but it's another lesson I've had to learn.

1st Ride DONE!!

Monday 9th Aug
One down 6 more to do. 76miles in 2hrs 28mins 😀

Last training ride

Saturday 7th Aug
Last training ride and I made it about Speed Endurance. 30.2miles in 60mins so happy with that. Now time to rest up and let my body recover before everything kicks of on Monday. The miles are in my legs by now so just hoping my old body holds up but I know I'll hurt in various places throughout the coming week. Thanks so much to those who have already Donated.

Great week!!

Saturday 24th Jul
This was the week I wasn't looking forward to. The week of 76mile rides!!. Well I've done 3 sub 3hour 76mile rides which where in fact a 87mile, 83mile and last night a total of 93miles long. All went very well and just as pleasing is that the £500 Donation Target got smashed in just over a week. For those who have already Donated then I can only give my sincere thanks and those of the Veterans who will benefit from the various types of support Combat Stress offer. To those who haven't as yet Donated then please please consider doing so. There's not many opportunities in normal life to change somebody else's for the better, this is one of those. Veterans are not only husbands/wives but mums and dads and sons and daughters. What affects these incredible people very quickly filters down to those who just cannot understand/comprehend the things they have experienced whilst serving this our country.

Did it!!!!

Tuesday 20th Jul
I did the full 76miles last night in 3hrs which was great to get done so I now know I have it in me. Its way too quick though to maintain for 7 consecutive days so need to work out a more sustainable pace/splits times. Hydration still needs some more work as I had to cycle the final 30mins without fluids which wasn't ideal. I plan to do a 'short' 25miler today to loosen my legs and so that I can feel how it is to ride after doing 76miles the night before.

Note to self, take more water!!

Friday 16th Jul
Good session tonight and hopefully learnt a good lesson, TAKE MORE FLUIDS. 65miles tonight so training is going well. Felt a bit sore after Wednesdays 50miles but learning all the time what works for me and what doesn't as regards fueling during rides and recovery. Donations are going well but I won't apologise for asking for more. The feelings of being tired and or uncomfortable I feel are nothing compared to how these Veterans are feeling and going through now and in the past. Let's give them a better future.  I met a Veteran this afternoon who saw action in the Falklands and Bosnia and sadly is going through a tough time but still has his pride. His story is why I'm doing this so please donate to Combat Stress who are helping people like Mo a proud member of the Blues and Royals family.

Tonights session. 50miles

Wednesday 14th Jul
Another good training session to build miles into my legs. 50miles done quite comfortably. Building slowly and should get to 76miles soon. Hopefully no adverse reaction from my knees etc tomorrow. Thanks to everybody who so kindly donated today 😀 I was talking to a Veteran today and she asked me to thank everybody for your support. Another way to help is by going into the Coffee Cell in Northgare Street run by Combat2Coffee. Great charity also supporting Veterans with MH problems.

Madness

Tuesday 13th Jul
Hi. To make things a little bit different and hopefully help people part with a little more of their hard earned money, I'm going to be cycling 76miles on 7 consecutive days. I must be mad as I'm no cyclist but my feeling is 'why do something easy when I could really challenge myself'. Training is going well but this is going to be a complete leap into the dark for me.
